Jacob Joe

Jacob Joe is a coast salish artist and has been carving for 26 years. He has always been interested in carving watching his father, Jacob Joe Sr. carve as a young boy. For a few years Jacob apprenticed with master carver Simon Charlie for 5 years along with his grand uncle Abram Joe and cousin Harold Joe. Jacob Joe' carvings grace the walls of collectors from New York to New Zealand. Jacob stays true to the heritage of the Salish design. This style is quite unique to the south coastal areas of Vancouver Island and mainland British Columbia. Among one of the many design rules Coast Salish design makes is that the inner and outer form is to be quite flowing, which can be seen in Jacob's work. Most of Jacob's pieces are availible with abalone or copper inlay.

Humming Birds

These hummingsbirds come with either a copper eye, carved eye, or with an abalone shell eye (as shown from left to right). Each style is available in left or right facing postitions.

The abalone shell in the lip signifies a type of cosmetic alteration that some tribes of the Northwest Coast used to do. The design on the top of the mask is an abstract interpretation of a Grey Whale. The circle above the eyebrow represents the eye of the whale.

This wolf is 12" long and is constructed out of a thick piece of wood (usually about 1 1/2"). Jacob inlays abalone shell in the eye, shoulder and hip of the wolf for emphasis.

The rays on this Sun Mask extend to about 2'. The face of the Sun is 8" in diameter. It is adorned with abalone shell in each of the four rays as well as the eyes.
