There were many legends created to explain the wonders and light of the sun. The peoples of the North West Coast believed when the earth was young, in total darkness, and with no living creatures, there lived a chief with his daughter who kept the ball of light in many bent-wood boxes which contained infinite numbers of boxes, each nestled in a box slightly smaller than itself until finally there was a box so small all it could contain was all the light in the universe.
It is believed that the mischievous Raven was responsible for stealing the light from the chief giving us the sun, moon and stars.
