Dick Joseph is a native
artist from the traditional territory which surrounds Campbell
River, B.C. This totem pole tells of the infamous Thunder Bird
capturing a whale. Below the whale is a representation of a
human with his daily catch of fish. These figures traditionally
are carved together to show both the physical and spiritual
relationship to one another. The Thunder Bird is the primary
spiritual guardian of humans, while the whale protects humans
in the ocean. The salmon is the primary staple of the native
people. Therefore, it is respected for the continuous bounty
that it brings each season to the people.
