Duke
James |

| Duke James is
from a family of carvers which includes his brothers and cousins.
He is a member of Penelakut Band. Duke is a self taught carver
and has cultivated his art work over the last eight years to
include carved miniature masks and totem poles. He is constantly
creating new designs and his portfolio consists of halibut bowls,
rattles, three-dimensional pieces, 1" thick disks as well
as a new butterfly design. His designs incorporate animals such
as the butterfly, eagle, salmon, Thunderbird, whale, beaver,
bear, loons, raven, frog, hummingbird, wolf, heron, as well
as the sun and the moon. He prefers to carve in yellow and red
cedar as well as pine. |

HERON (with stand)
The Heron is an expert hunter of minnows and frogs,
who marked the falling of twilight by his arrival, was referred
to by the west coast people as the "raven of the sea,"
which is quite descriptive of the big B.C. shore bird.

EAGLE AND SALMON
This plaque shows the eagle catching
its food source. An ealge soaring in wide circles was a
good omen for hunters. The eagle could see the past and
future of anything it looked at.
