Pewter Picture Frames
By Glen Rabina

Primarily interested in carving, Glen Rabina is also an accomplished serigraph artist, known for his bird & wildlife prints. He has studied at the Gitanmax school of Northwest Coast Indian art at K'san and  works in both traditional and modern styles of Haida design. Glen also works with fellow Haida artists on collaborative carvings, most recently, a totem pole at Masset on the north coast of the Queen Charlotte Islands. Glen now makes his home on one of B.C.'s Gulf Islands, where he continues his work in a variety of mediums.

Although Glen Rabina is not from native descent, his work is given respect in the native community.  It is because of his studies at K'san and his respect for the Native culture and tradition that his work is held up, which is a great honor in the Native culture.

Raven/Eagle Design
Stylized Haida Picture Frame

The Raven and the Eagle are the two main clan crest of the Haida people of the Queen Charlotte Islands - or Haida Gwai. Raven is said to have stolen a ball of light from the chief who kept it hidden. The trickster flew away with his prize, but was chased by the Eagle who caused him to drop it. The ball of light fell and shattered, the larger pieces becoming the sun and moon, and the smaller fragments the stars.

Nansimget Legend
Haida Dwelling Picture Frame

At the top of the poles are the Watchmen - on the lookout for enemies approaching the village. Below them, the figure of Nansimget riding a whale. This Haida legend tells of his journey to the home of the Killer Whale Chief beneath the sea, to rescue his wife, taken while washing furs by the shore. Below sits Raven the Trickster, according to legend, responsible for bringing light to the world. The roof beams are decorated with a stylized Raven design.
