from the villages.

Bukwus
This carving is depicts the creature that lives in
the forest called bookwus. Sometimes paralleled with the saskwatch bukwus
was hairy with animalistic behavior with a human like body. There are
many various stories about the bukwus in various northern native villages
of British Columbia, but each story shares bukwus' love for muscles and
clams.

It was believed
that long ago the animals had the ability to change into many forms. This
mask depicts a whale transforming into a whale. In some villages it was
believed that sometime the whale would transform into a human at night
to seek shelter and sleep in caves.

ago that the thunderbird took human form at times when humans were in
great need of guidance. Disguised as a warrior or elder thunderbird would
come from out of the woods, give his advice and then go back into the
