Joe Bolton

Joe Bolton has studied with many accomplished native artists including Henry Robertson, Barry Wilson and Dereck Wilson. Carving Totem Poles as an exhibitor in the Pacific National Exibition in Vancouver and Cloverdale Rodeo, such events have brought Joe a following of international collectors.Carving for 20 years Joe has created a diverse collection of artwork including clocks, plaques and varied sizes of masks. New to his portfolio are varied sizes of 3 dimensional miniature Northwest coast figurines that will be features here soon.

Galleries now housing collections of Joe Boltons work include the Royal Ontario Museum, and University of British Columbia museum of anthropology.

 

Tsonoqwa

The wild woman of the woods depicted here with closed eyes and open mouth. The wild woman of the woods legend kept children inside the longhouse at night.The wild woman was told to look in the forest at night in the woods for lost children from the villages.

Bukwus

This carving is depicts the creature that lives in the forest called bookwus. Sometimes paralleled with the saskwatch bukwus was hairy with animalistic behavior with a human like body. There are many various stories about the bukwus in various northern native villages of British Columbia, but each story shares bukwus' love for muscles and clams.

Whale Transformation Mask

It was believed that long ago the animals had the ability to change into many forms. This mask depicts a whale transforming into the whale. In some villages it was believed that sometime the whale would transform into a human at night to seek shelter and sleep in caves.

Red Tailed Hawk

Shown here is Joes representation of a Red tailed hawk. Respected in northern tribes for its great hunting ability , Joe has carved a portrait of this magniifcent bird with the hawks wing design in the cheek.

White Raven Mask

As a young boy Joe was told that long ago Raven was once white.Ravens change was the result of Raven flying thorough the smoke hole of a long house turning him black and the heat seared Ravens melodious voice.

Thunderbird Spirit Mask

Thunderbird loved humans and felt as a protectorate towards humans.It was believed long ago that the thunderbird took human form at times when humans were in great need of guidance. Disguised as a warrior or elder thunderbird would come from out of the woods, give his advice and then go back into the forest and disappear

Frog Transformation Mask

This mask depicts the forg transforming into a human form. Among the Northern Tribes frog is a clan symbol and is highly respected as a guardian symbol which is why frog adorns so may totems.
