The Whale or Orca is the guardian of our native people in the ocean. Long ago some villages believed that the Orca came from a black wolf that swam in the ocean.

 Sun
The Sun is considered by native people to be the witness to all the events of the day. Long ago, it was believed that the sun was captured by the native people (when it transformed into an eagle and came down to the earth for some food). |
Long ago, it was believed by our native people that the salmon were actually warriors of the salmon people transformed when they were in the water. That is why it is customary to always put the bones back in the water after eating a salmon, so the warriors to return home safely after all. |

long ago it was believed that a young boy asked thunderbird if he could carve t-birds image on the totem poles. Thunderbird said "yes but only if I am on top of the totem". |
Wolf Pendant
It is believed by our native people that the wolf is the symbol of intuition and forbearing knowledge. As well, it is considered to be a spiritual protector of the native people. Wolf was always bound to help humans upon being called. |

The Loon was considered by some tribes to be the
greatest fisherman. Other eastern tribes believe that the first loon was
a reincarnation of a chief's young daughter who drowned. The pattern
around the neck of the loon was the prized bone necklace that was given
to the young woman. |
Some villages believe that raven is a morality play showing that a universal balance exists, as mischievous Raven's actions always helps the world more than himself directly, despite his selfishness. Whereas, in other villages, Raven is responsible for giving light to the world, finding humans, and creating whole islands. (This design depicts Raven flying away with the light of the world in his beak) |

This design depicts the copper shield that was reserved for chiefs of great wealth. It was considered so valuable that even a piece of this type of shield was valued equal to one fully in tact. Depicted on the shield are the mighty thunderbird and whale. |

The bear clan of the Haida came from
the bear mother, a chiefs daughter, who fell in love with a bear and married
him. Their offspring could transform from human to bear at will and became
the guardians of the native people on land.
