Pewter Potpourri Boxes

by Glen Rabina

Primarily interested in carving, Glen Rabina is also an accomplished serigraph artist, known for his bird & wildlife prints. He has studied at the Gitanmax school of Northwest Coast Indian art at K'san and  works in both traditional and modern styles of Haida design. Glen also works with fellow Haida artists on collaborative carvings, most recently, a totem pole at Masset on the north coast of the Queen Charlotte Islands. Glen now makes his home on one of B.C.'s Gulf Islands, where he continues his work in a variety of mediums.

Although Glen Rabina is not from native descent, his work is given respect in the native community.  It is because of his studies at K'san and his respect for the Native culture and tradition that his work is held up, which is a great honor in the Native culture.

Hummingbird Pewter Potpourri Pot
$ 33.00 Cdn

Here, the artist depicts a top down view of a hummingbird flying through a cluster of flowers. The oval like circles in this design are called ovoids. They represent the joints of the animal. A large ovoid denotes the primary joint used by the animal. For instance, the shoulder joint for birds.

Moon Pewter Box
$33.00 Cdn

The face in this piece represents the full moon. In traditional design, the moon cycle can by shown by the degree of the profile of the moon. The fuller the moon the more face that is shown in the design. Only when the design has the full face is it considered the full moon. When the full moon has a hue around it's face, it means that it is a storm moon.

Large Ealge Pot

This design represents the eagle in flight. The inlayed pieces represent the primary joints of the ealge that are necessary to flight(namely the wings and tail).This is important because these joints would be recognized in nothwest coast native design by shapes known as ovoids. For the native people the dynamics of motion and flight also captivated their intrigue and became pivital part in the graphic design of these animals in their artwork.
