Susan A. Point

Susan is a Coast Salish artist.  She was born in 1952 and lives in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.  Susan is one of a handful of contemporary Coast Salish artists engaged in reviving the ancient principles of Coast Salish design. In 1980 Susan began studying engraving, serigraphy and acrylics. As well as practicing traditional motifs, Susan also expresses her own personal style, keeping within the parameters of Coast Salish elements. To date, Susan has produced more than seventy limited edition prints including 23K gold embossings, woodblock prints, serigraphs, glass etchings and handmade paper castings. Susan is more popularly known today for her work as a serigrapher, silver and 18K gold engraver and fine painter (medium mainly being acrylics on canvas). Presently, Susan has become involved learning the process of handmade paper on which she hand pulls some of her limited edition prints. Also, Susan is studying three dimensional design concepts with respect to jewellery and small sculptures. In Susan's work one can see a love for precision and a n extraordinary sense of color. Susan's work can presently be found in private and corporate collections in over twenty countries around the world.

Relationship of Dependency

"This image is meant to reflect communication, working together and energy. Of the images and symbols traditionally used by the Coast Salish, I felt that the Raven would best symbolize these qualities. The Raven known for its creative powers, communication and transforming abilities is considered by many the most important creature symbolizing prestige and knowledge. This particular print depicts four Ravens coming together with the dawn of a new day (era) in the background. The position of the Ravens kind of gives one the impression that they are negotiating. There is a feeling of resolution and acceptability. The posture is meant to suggest that they are compatible and participating equally in consultation affecting understanding and creation of new objectives. The lines within the wings of the Raven and the movement created by these lines is to symbolize fluidity and energy."                                                 Susan Point

Storm Wind

This print shows a man within a whale's fin in a stormy sea.  There are a few interpretations of such a motif. The wind in native belief is a spirit that blows the air  or wisps by you creating a wind. The face super imposed on the whale demonstrates the symbiotic relationship of the wind spirit merging together with the Orca.  This is indicative of the faces in the spindle whirl plates made in the 1800's.

Glass Sculptures by Susan Point

Circles In Time II

This is the last sand blasted glass plate currently available.

This plate models the famous Coast Salish Spindle Whorl design. The Spindle whorl was a disk that was centered on a pole used to hold spun wool. These Whorls were then carved with elaborate Coast Salish design. The Ladies of the Musqueum tribes have been world reknown for their large woven wollen tapestries in museum colections all over the world. This tradition has now been revitalized in the Musqueum tribe and is acknowledged and celebrated with pride in the artwork of Susan Point.

Susan has created a piece that has concetric circles of varying depths outlined with "split U" pattern for the outside trim. The glass in about 1/4" thick and the patterns are deeply carved into the glass.
